Nathan graduated with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois before starting his graduate career at the University of Iowa.  He is currently in his fifth year of his Ph.D. work in the Donelson lab.

His project entails studying the trafficking of a protein called T-lymphocyte triggering factor (TLTF) to the sole site of endo- and exocytosis of African Trypanosomes. Using genetic and biochemical approaches, he and Dr. Kent Hill, have shown that TLTF associates with the trypanosome cytoskeleton, and they have identified a novel protein trafficking domain that is responsible for the localization of a TLTF:GFP fusion protein.
