Heat Inactivation of Fetal Bovine Serum

Pre-heat a water bath to 60 degrees Centigrade.

Thaw a bottle (0.5 L) of fetal calf (bovine) serum at room temp for several hours or over night at 4 degrees. Do not let it sit thawed for more than 24 hours.

Swirl the thawed serum to mix and place in the 60 degree bath.

Let sit for 40 – 45 minutes. (Do not go shorter than 40 or longer than 45 minutes).

Sterile filter with a 500 ml Nalgene (0.22 um filter).

IN THE HOOD, aliquot into sterile 50 ml conical tubes labeled with the lot number and date.

Store aliquots at –20 degrees.
